A Simple Way to Dress-up a Plain Bookcase

I’m moving!  I had ordered a white bookcase to go in my yellow room, but it now resides in a rental standard white room.  Boring.  I plan to repaint the bedroom furniture, so once I decided on a color I thought the inside back of my bookcase would be a perfect place to start.  It makes the bookshelf stand out, plus gives me a real taste of the color in the room.

A small white bookcase with the inside back painted french gray.

The bookshelf is just your basic cheap, white bookcase & the paint is Glidden’s French Grey.  I bought the sampler bottle for about $2.50 & painted it with a foam brush.  It hadn’t been assembled yet, so it was super easy to paint.

Peppermint Bark broken up in a bowl

Peppermint Bark!

I made this for Christmas, but have seen something similar made with red hots so that would make a nice Valentine’s Day variation.  It was very popular & most commonly described as “pure sugar”.  It’s like a tastier version of rocket fuel!

I first made this a few years ago after finding some large skewered marshmallows coated in chocolate & peppermint.  This was my, far lazier, version of that.  No cooking required, just a little time in the microwave for melting the chocolate. (The pics were a last minute idea while I was making them Christmas & I was running late, so here you are shadows & all.)

Hurray! I finished a new project & actually got pics of it.  I have needed a way to organize & display my jewelry so I will actually wear more of it.

Chicken Coop Hanging Jewelry Holder with jewelry

Chicken Coop Hanging Jewelry Holder

I made it entirely out of things I had around the house, so it was FREE :D  The only thing I did buy was some Krylon Crystal Clear Clear Gloss.  I used rusted nails for the hooks, & didn’t want the rust to transfer onto my jewelry. (Excuse the less than stellar pics.  My camera battery was dead, so I used my phone.) Continue reading »

I need to do this!  Back in May on the last post I made before I quit blogging over here for a while, Millie On Her World nominated me for a One Lovely Blog Award.  I hate that it has taken me months to acknowledge this:(  But I haven’t forgotten & I’m doing it now!

One Lovely Blog AwardFirst I want to thank Millie so much for this!  It’s my first blog award:)  She does such cute crochet goodies, I feel especially pleased to have her recognize me on her blog.

And now for the rules!

The guidelines for accepting this award are as follows:
1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their blog in your post.
2. Share 7 things about yourself.
3. Nominate about 15 other blogs that you enjoy.
4. Let the nominees know that you chose them. (An aside:  if you don’t want to play or pass along the award, that’s totally fine.   Just know that this is my way of saying, “I like your blog!  I really do!”)

So, seven random things about me:
1. I run.
2. I wrote a novel & someday will actually try to sell it.
3. I used to write poetry & do readings, but when I finally got published I quit.  I think it was a timing issue, because it happened right before I was starting grad school.
4. I have my a Master’s degree in Social Work.
5. I’m Cherokee from my mother’s family.
5. I’m moving to Portland, OR next year!
6. I used to be a vegetarian.

As I mentioned yesterday, I finally built a lightbox.  It’s something I have had in mind for a while, but was never sure just quite how I wanted to do it.   I finally decided to bite the bullet & do it.  I once again hit the faithful internet, most high font of ideas, & then whipped one up with items I had on hand.  FREE!

my collapsible cardboard box baseThe secret to an easy, free collapsible lightbox is a collapsible cardboard box, so that’s where I started.  I had one I had been saving for some nonspecific need I knew I would have in the future.

materials for lightbox

I also used two sheets of white poster board, clear packing tape, Elmer’s Glue All, scissors, a ruler & a measuring tape, a pencil, & a goose neck clip on desk lamp.  I wish I had had a yardstick for a straight edge, but I made do.

DIY embroidered & stamped bday card @ Clouds of Color

DIY: Birthday card & fabric flower giftbox. | Clouds of Colour.

Clouds of Color posted this idea the other day & I just loved it!  Her card is unique & cute.  She used stamped & embroidered details to give her sketched design color & dimension.  This is definitely something I plan to try in the near future.

This idea was based off her cross-stitch Mother’s Day card.

DIY Hoop Earrings from Cut Out + Keep

Cut Out + Keep, DIY, earrings, handmade, how to, jewelry, wire

I have been working with hoop earrings lately, but I can only find one style around here, which works well enough, but isn’t exactly what I want.  I would like to have more style options, plus get the cost down.  As a person on a budget, I like to offer affordable items for other people in my boat.  Even poor people should be able to buy handmade:)

While looking for some online options I found this how-to for making your own wire hoop earrings with things I already have on hand.  Score!  Planning to give it a try, but in the meantime I thought I would share.  I will update you later when I have actually made some.

Sadly, the iframes required to embed the project do not work in WordPress.com sites, so here is a screen cap that links to the project.  Enjoy!

If anyone tries this, or has tried this, I would love to know how it went!

Also, I feel I should mention I found this project by way of Creative Crafting.

Glitter Pegs @ City in a Jar

DIY // glitter pegs. « City In A Jar.

From the simple yet brilliant files – glittered clothes pins.  I love this idea!  I have been working up an idea that involves painted wooden clothes pins, but I have never considered glittering them.  I think I would combine the two & paint the pins before glittering.  I like that she only glitters the front, because I know me & I’d roll the whole thing in glitter.  I just can’t seem to help myself when there’s glitter involved.

Check out her blog post to see the whole project yourself.
